Stephen F. Austin
Stephen F. Austin was the son of Moses Austin, who worked to start the first Anglo American colony in Texas. Moses died before this could happen, so Stephen F. Austin took on what his father had wanted to do. Austin was thrown into jail for suspicion of encouraging a revolt against the Mexican government. In 1836, the war for Texas was won. Stephen F. Austin then served as the secretary of state until his death.
